87-Year-Old Korean War Veteran Completes High School

An 87-year-old Korean War veteran has finally received his high school diploma. Robert Quincel had to drop out of South High School in South Columbus, Ohio to help provide for his family when his mother was injured. Before he could return to school, Quincel was drafted into the army to fight in the Korean War.

Nearly seven decades later, Quincel was presented with an honorary diploma from his former high school.

"I think I earned it from having hard knocks," Quincel told FOX28. He said that earning his diploma "really does mean something, especially, when you know, all these years have passed."

Robert and his wife Marjorie, have three kids and 12 grandchildren, and he was the only one who did not have a high school diploma. His daughter found a piece of legislation that allows school districts to give out honorary diplomas to veterans who were drafted during World War II, Korea, or Vietnam and never got a chance to complete school.

The road to getting his diploma was not easy. When his family first sent in the paperwork, it got lost and they had to resubmit everything. After he was approved to get his diploma, Quincel and his wife lacked a ride to the board meeting where it would be presented to him. Local news station ABC 6/FOX 28 stepped up and drove the two of them to the meeting where board members presented him with his honorary diploma.
