In the UK, Hayley Black woke up one morning and yawned so intensely that she actually broke her own neck. Black’s initial play was to heat up a bottle for her baby. When the infant yawned, Black thought she could use a good yawn too…but it was too good. Instantly, the 36-year-old mother felt “an instant shock sensation” that shot through her body and left her arm stuck in the air. Sensing something was seriously wrong, she asked her husband to get her to a hospital, where scans revealed the C6 and C7 bones in her neck at “shot forward into her spine” because of the power of that yawn. Emergency surgery was performed, and serious injury was avoided, though for a bit, there was a legitimate concern of possible paralysis.
