Saturday was a really fun day, truly one for the books. Headed over to Dubuque with some friends for a boat cruise up and down the Mississippi River. It was a blast, my son had a wonderful time swimming and riding on the pontoon. If only I had known what was gonna be happening just up and downstream from us...
I had heard stories about this happening, but never seen pictures or even it illustrated like this:
That's right, the green and yellow on the radar is not rain. It's mayflies. I'm not even really grossed out by bugs, but that is intense and makes me feel icky. The amount of mayflies it would take for that to happen is in the millions.
My co-worker Garrett was telling me that when he lived in La Crosse, you'd see this happen regularly. The bugs swarm fast, and no one goes outside. Google search "mayfly hatch" to see some pictures that really sell what's happening here. They all hatch at the same time, then die off within a couple of days.
