Wisconsin's football schedule allows for flexibility

Wisconsin's 2020 season is scheduled to begin as it was originally intended: a Friday, September 4 home game against Indiana in a Big Ten crossover.

Beyond that, however, the football schedule (and landscape) looks very, very different.

With the idea in mind that the start of the season could be pushed back, the Big Ten Conference built in three open dates to its 10-game schedule, allowing for games in September to mesh within the remaining calendar to accommodate any change in schedules. Wisconsin shares bye weeks with its Big Ten West opponents early in the year, and the entire conference has the Saturday after Thanksgiving as an open date to handle any delays ahead of the Big Ten Championship.

Wisconsin's actual Big Ten schedule composition is slightly different as well. The Badgers will still play all of the teams they were slated to in the conference as drawn up in the original schedule, but with three changes.

  • First, instead of hosting Nebraska, the Badgers will be making the trip to Lincoln. That game is scheduled for September 19.
  • Second, instead of making the flight to West Lafayette, Wisconsin will host Purdue on October 10.
  • Finally, the Badgers' 10th Big Ten opponent in a crossover will be a game at Rutgers November 21.

Several dates have also changed on the Big Ten calendar, including Wisconsin's rivalry game with Minnesota, now set for September 26 instead of November 28. Most of the Big Ten saw rivalry games move into the month of September, so the Badgers are not alone.

2020 promises to be an interesting year in all of sports, as every sport scheduled to be underway by now has been greatly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. For now, the Big Ten has put out a roadmap of how the football season could unfold, with several options built in, in the event the season is delayed.
