Sober dating is a big trend right now and a new dating app shows just how many people are into it. Club Pillar just launched last week and it’s now the first referral-only sober dating app. It’s far from free, but sober and sober-curious daters don’t seem to mind. Before it launched, it had a waitlist of 5-thousand people eager to join.
Jessie Urvater came up with the idea for a sober dating app while having lunch with a friend and talking about the fact that it's hard to meet people who are also sober and want to date. She did some research and found the sober curious movement is growing every year and that there are a lot of people who’d want to date someone who’s sober or sober curious. But she says, “It’s really hard to find and meet like-minded individuals who are either light drinkers, sober, sober curious or in recovery outside of the rooms of AA.”
Urvater discovered there was a gap in the dating app market for those who want to avoid or limit alcohol and the idea for Club Pillar was born. But you can’t just sign up and join, it’s much more exclusive than that.
- Potential members need to get three referrals in order to apply to join Club Pillar.
- Club Pillar vets all prospective members by asking how much they drink, whether they’re completely sober, sober curious, or a recovering alcoholic.
- There are several subscription tiers, the basic one is $29.99 a month or $287 a year and it gives users five swipes a day, with the option to buy extra swipe bundles.
- There’s also a premium tier, which is $49.99 a month or $479 a year. With this membership, users get 10 swipes a day, along with that option to buy additional swipe bundles. But they also get access to events where sober daters can mingle in real life.
- Urvater says they don’t have a set amount of members allowed, it’s up to the membership committee and who they choose to accept.
