Women Like To Date Younger Too!

When it comes to dating, we've all heard the clichés: men chase youth, women seek stability. But science just threw a curveball at that old story. A massive new study of over 4,500 blind dates shows that women are just as into younger partners as men are.

Researchers found that when women meet someone in real life (that means no filters, no swiping), they're just as likely to be attracted to a younger guy as a man is to a younger woman. And this wasn’t just about casual flings. These were people looking for serious, long-term relationships. So, what gives? If women like younger men, why do most couples still follow the older-man-younger-woman formula? Let’s break it down:

  • Blind Dates Don’t Lie: Researchers tracked over 6-thousand people on nearly 4,500 blind dates and found a consistent trend: people are interested in youth. Women’s attraction to younger men was just as strong as men’s attraction to younger women. That potentially surprising data point happened when no photos, bios, or age filters got in the way.
  • What We Say We Want VS What We Really Want: Participants told matchmakers their preferred age ranges before dates, but those limits didn’t mean much in the moment. About 15-percent of participants ended up dating someone outside their stated range and felt just as attracted anyway. It turns out age preferences might be more flexible, and subconscious, than we thought.
  • Attraction Doesn’t Mean Relationship: So why don’t we see more older-woman-younger-man couples? Researchers think its because initial chemistry isn’t the same as long-term compatibility. Women might feel sparks with younger men, but practical factors like career stage or future planning may tip the scales toward older partners later on.
  • The Dating Pool Pre-Selects: Matchmakers in the study tended to pair women with slightly older men: about three-and-a-half years older on average. That mirrors the age gap in couples who agreed to a second date. So it might not be that women choose older men, it’s just who they’re being matched with from the get-go.
  • Early Life Patterns Stick: Girls typically mature earlier than boys, which means as teens, they often date partners a bit older than them. That habit may quietly shape their preferences into adulthood, even if their actual attractions shift. It's a case of old patterns sticking around longer than we think.
  • Everyone Is A Fan Of Youth It Seems: The study found a small but steady preference for youth across all genders. This goes against the long-standing idea that only men want younger partners.
  • Dating Apps Might Be Leading Us Astray: If people are more open to younger partners than they realize, age filters on apps might be blocking potential matches. It’s possible our love lives are being limited by our own inaccurate preferences. Is it time to rethink that age range slider on your dating app?
  • This Doesn’t Apply To Everyone: Most participants were relatively affluent and open to blind dates, so results might not reflect the entire population. Still, the findings were consistent across demographics, suggesting this isn’t just a fluke.
